when we all moved out, we told mac that the apartment was such a mess already when we got there that we shouldn't have to pay for anything. we also never gave them a security deposit which helped. we did go down there in force and wouldn't leave until they agreed to not make us pay.
There's more transparency in this case that culpability is direct line to trace: paid a security deposit; the lease never changed hands; (more-or-less) lived there alone for three years.
